First Baptist Church Chappell Hill
Church History

In 1982, Bob and Linda Keaton felt the need for a Bible Study in the Chappell Hill area where they lived.  So they contacted a few of their acquaintances and opened their home for the meeting.  The first group included Bob and Linda Keaton, Roy and Joy Kipp, Theo and Kathryn Byargeon, Jack Winters and a couple of students from Blinn College.

A few weeks later, Bob was contacted by Brother Joe McCammon, a church planter from First Baptist Church, Brenham.  Joe and his wife Debbie joined the Bible Study, and he led it for the next nine months.  The group grew and moved to Kipp’s Antiques, then the home of Roy and Joy Kipp.

The group was classified as a mission and continued to grow.  The mission needed more space and obtained permission from the Chappell Hill Historical Society to meet in their museum.  Brother McCammon became the first pastor and served for about a year.

Brother Gary Kuntz was called to be the second pastor and came on the field on October 2, 1983.  On October 30th of that same year, 21 persons signed a petition requesting that the church become a duly constituted church; the petition was presented to the Independence Baptist Association.  Brother Kuntz led the church for about two years.

In February 1986, Brother Chet Purdy was called as the third pastor.  For a time, Ross Sinclair served as part-time Youth Minister.  Under Brother Purdy’s leadership, the church stepped out on faith and built the current church building.  The church provided the materials and the Texas Baptist Men Retiree Builders provided most of the labor.  In thirteen days, the Baptist Men and local volunteers completed 90% of the work on the building.

Brother Purdy served First Baptist Church Chappell Hill until September 1987.  He was followed by two interim pastors: Brother Duane Davis and later, Brother Charlie Matejowski.

In January 1989, Brother David Beckworth became the fourth and present pastor.  The church continued to grow, and on April 25, 1993 Brother Terry Wilkins was called to be Minister of Music, Education and Youth.  In the year 2000, Trey Scheaffer joined the staff to lead the youth.  After his post-college move, Lauren Neito joined the staff in October of 2004.  Lauren led the Youth program until May 2007.  Brother Wilkins served until July 2007.

This church began with the belief that Bible Study is an important part of life.  That belief is lived out today in regular Sunday morning Bible Study classes as well as in the Community-Wide Ladies’ Bible Study groups that meet on Tuesday and Thursday during the school year.

As plans for the future unfold, the church has acquired 16 acres located at the intersection of US Hwy. 290 and FM 2447.  Through generous gifts from members and friends of the church, the property is now debt free.  A Master Plan for phased development of the new church campus has been designed and donated by David Smith; and a 3-year fund raising campaign began in May 2006.  Phase IA construction (infrastructure—well, septic, electrical service, access to the site, parking—and an outdoor pavilion) has been approved and will begin very soon.     9/30/07

On Sunday afternoon, April 25, 2004, the church gathered to burn the note on this property.  God has provided 16 + acres debt-free!
